Trust

This morning I was considering what it means to be set free from bondage we put ourselves under.  We serve a God who owns not only the world and it’s inhabitants, but also all of it’s resources which He has placed in our care and management.

Romans 8 1-11 (NASV)
8 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

I presently know a person where I work who has lost her home due to foreclosure.  This person is a young woman who is experiencing a lot of guilt and shame because of the expectation of having to keep and maintain a large house and mortgage and through her failure of not being able to keep it going.  She and her husband have been struggling to remain employed in this current economy, but circumstances regarding their employment have forced them into foreclosure.  I have been encouraging her to trust the Lord.  Sometimes God allows the stuff that we hold on to, to be removed from our lives so that we can focus on the more necessary things, like giving our time to family, marriage, and most of all our relationship with Him.

God has a way of getting to the heart of who we are very quickly.

Things or possessions do not define us, God defines us.

1 Chronicles 29:10-16 (GWT)

10 he praised the Lord while the whole assembly watched. David said,
“May you be praised, Lord God of Israel,
        our father forever and ever.
11     Greatness, power, splendor, glory, and majesty are yours, Lord,
because everything in heaven and on earth is yours.
            The kingdom is yours, Lord,
and you are honored as head of all things.
12                     Riches and honor are in front of you.
            You rule everything.
You hold power and strength in your hands,
and you can make anyone great and strong.
13     “Our God, we thank you
        and praise your wonderful name.
14             But who am I and who are my people
that you enable us to give so generously?
            Everything comes from you.
We give you only what has come from your hands.
15             To you we are all like our ancestors—
                foreigners without permanent homes.
Our days are as fleeting as shadows on the ground.
                        There’s no hope for them.
16 Lord, our God, all this wealth that we gathered to build a temple for your holy name is from you. All of it is yours.

Even King David saw that everything comes from the Lord.  It is not about us and all of our effort, it is about Him.

Lord, I recognize that all things belong to you, and every good and perfect gift comes from you.  I know that bondage to possessions is merely holding on to something that you have freely given, and something that you could take away in an instant.  Help me not to allow possessions to become idols in my life, but to freely surrender my possessions to you for your purpose in me and through me.  I know that you are my provider and you will always give me what is best, and give me what I need.  I trust you, and praise you because you have proven yourself to be faithful.  Thank you Lord.

It's the sweetest thing... to trust you
just to know... You got everything under control
it's the sweetest thing... to trust you
just to know... You got everything

Chorus:
And You are making me a mountain
making me a mountain
that cannot be shaken
Well You are making me a mountain
that cannot be moved

High up on a rock, looking out at the horizon
Watching as the storm rolls in wondering if my heart will survive it
And as the waves crash all... around me
And I can't remember what it feels like... to be free

Chorus:

Bridge:
You say, I've got you my baby Oh, I've got you
It's quite the mess you're in but it's nothing Love can't fix
So sit here upon... my shoulders
and watch as it all unwinds

Chorus:
You are making me a mountain
making me a mountain
that cannot be shaken

I Know You're making me a mountain
making me a mountain
that cannot be moved
